Obituary of ANTHONY J. SAPIA

Anthony J. (Tony) Sapia, 85, a lifelong Stamford resident passed away on January 29, 2014 after a fight with cancer. He left his loving family quietly and at peace. He was born on June 22, 1928, the son of the late Alfonso and Josephine (Gellici) Sapia. Tony was known as "The Best" fast pitch softball player. He was a respected coach in Springdale Little League having coached during the 1960s-1970s. Tony enjoyed teaching the game more than playing. He was a lifelong Yankee fan. Tony was a member of the Piedmont Club in Darien and was still a member at the time of his passing. He worked for Gaynor News formerly of Stamford for many years. Tony will be missed by all who knew him. He is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Flora (Crane) Sapia. He is survived by his loving son, Anthony E. Sapia and his wife Cathy of Port Chester, NY, his brother, James Sapia of Hamden, CT, sisters, Anna Ofiero of Darien, CT, Lucy Sapia of Rockyhill, CT, and two grandchildren, Peter and Tony. Also surviving is his brother-in-law, Louis DaPra of Norwalk, CT, brother and sister-in-law, Vinny and Arlene Bellissimo of Naples, FL, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, Frank Sapia, Joseph Sapia, sisters, Rose Giglio, Katherine Sapia, Mary "Babs" Sapia, Frances Ambruoso and Jennie Smith. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on FRIDAY, February 7, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford. Interment will take place in private. Relatives and friends may call at the Lacerenza Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford on FRIDAY, February 7, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 38 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT 06854.
