Obituary of CARL C. GALASSO
Carl C. "Collie" Galasso Sr., passed away peacefully on April 25, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born on April 3, 1918, he was the son of Angelo Galasso and Angelina Mancusi.
Carl grew up and lived his entire life in Stamford, CT. He was married for 73 years to Mildred Galasso (D'Agostino) and together they had four children, Carl Galasso Jr., deceased, Angela Galasso (Donald Hartman), Jacqueline Schonberg (Peter), and Lucy Galasso (Dr. Alan McCollom).
Carl was a private first class in World War II and fought in the largest battle of the war "The Battle of the Bulge" in the Ardennes region of Belgium, where he bravely and proudly defended his country. Most of his career was spent at Birch Meadows Corporation where he was the Superintendent of a large estate where he architected and maintained sprawling lawns and gardens . His work was featured in Bartlett Tree Catalogues.
Carl's lifetime hobby was pigeon racing. He founded the Stamford Pigeon Club and held the position of vice president for many years. He genetically produced a line of pigeons that were bred for long distance flying. Contributions to this gene pool came from the lofts of Queen Elizabeth and Benito Mussolini. Carl tirelessly trained his flock and was the recipient of many awards and trophies.
Carl is most importantly remembered as a dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather to Gena Galasso Russo (Brian), Torrie Marie Hartman, Jordan Galasso McCollom (Tracy), Steven Perry Schonberg and great-grandfather to Logan Carl Russo, Leah Grace McCollom, Reid William Russo and Owen James McCollom. He was the uncle to many nieces and nephews. Carl was preceded in death by his brother, Daniel Galasso and sisters Lucy Posidento and Catherine Galasso.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended to his dedicated caretakers especially Yomayra Martinez who sincerely loved and skillfully nursed him, she is quoted here, "I feel so honored to have taken care of such an amazing man that had a unique and gorgeous smile and an unrelenting warm personality."
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Church, 37 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park, Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford, CT. Relatives and friends may call at the Lacerenza Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT on Thursday, April 28, 2016 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM.
