Obituary of Joseph A Marrucco

Joseph Anthony “Joe” Marrucco, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family  on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Stamford Hospital.  He was born on July 1, 1935 to the late Anthony J. and Antoinette (Genovese) Marrucco.

Joe was a member of the Stamford High School class of 1953, where he earned 7 varsity letters, in addition to being awarded the prestigious Dr. David Sloman Award for Outstanding Athlete.  In his senior year, Joe was the leading homerun hitter, helping his team win the Fairfield County Championship.  Joe was Co-Captain of Coach Kuczo’s State Champion Black Knights Football team in 1952.  That year, Joe scored 10 touchdowns, including a 99 yard run to break open the game against Warren Harding.  He went on to the University of Bridgeport where he played baseball and football and was also a standout with several Twilight League championship teams.  Joe hit so many homeruns into the water at Seaside Park that they nicknamed it “Marrucco Gardens.”  During Joe’s tryout with the New York Yankees, he hit 2 homeruns out of right field at the old Yankee Stadium.  He later turned to officiating and worked area baseball, football and basketball games for many years.

Joe was Sales Manager at Redman Chevrolet and later became the owner of The Beverage Barn in Stamford.  After retiring, Joe was a ranger at E. Gaynor Brennan “Hubbard Heights” Golf Course, a place he truly enjoyed.  Throughout his life Joe volunteered for many organizations and it was a priority for him to give back to his community, in particular those benefitting Stamford youth sports.

Joe is survived by his high school sweetheart Carole Attanasio Marrucco, whom he married in 1956.  They recently celebrated their 61st  wedding anniversary.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.  He adored his daughters Marlene Recchia (Michael), Michele Marrucco and Andrea Vigliotti (Michael). His grandchildren Michael Joseph Recchia, Megan Elyse Vigliotti and Michael Nicholas Vigliotti were the light of his life. “Poppy” never missed a ball game or a dance recital, no matter what state it was in.  Joe is also survived by his sister Rosemarie (Emanuel) Blosio and several nieces, nephews and dear lifelong friends in Stamford and Vero Beach, FL. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister and brother- in-law Carmela and Ted Flandreau and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Sara and Nick Attanasio.

A funeral procession will be leaving Lacerenza Funeral Home, 8 Schuyler Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 at 10:15am on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 for a mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00am at St. Leo’s RC Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford.  Interment will follow at Queen of Peace Cemetery, Stamford.  Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm.
