Lynn Marie Sutherland, 54, of Stamford, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017, at The Greens of Cannondale surrounded by her cousin and close friends after a nearly-three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her parents, George B. and Patricia (Racaniello) Sutherland of Stamford, her sister, Cindy M. Sutherland of Rochester, VT, as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and so many dear friends. She was a devoted and faithful daughter, sister, granddaughter, cousin, niece, godmother and friend. Lynn’s beautiful smile and bright blue eyes, her joyful and free-spirited attitude along with her unique contagious laugh, for which she was known as “Giggles" in college, will be well missed.
She touched and inspired so many by her faith, positivity, strength, generosity, love and kindness. A lifelong resident of Stamford, Lynn graduated from Stamford High School, Class of 1981, and received a B.A. from Boston University in accounting. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority and was the first “Rhett” dog mascot at B.U. In 2003, Lynn received a Masters in Education from Sacred Heart University, leaving her corporate work to become an elementary teacher specializing in math and science. She taught at Stark Elementary and Wilton Elementary, then later tutored for Kumon and privately until her very last days.
Lynn’s love for children extended beyond the classroom to her friend's children as a beloved fairy godmother. She was also well known for throwing neighborhood Easter egg hunts, gift giving at Christmas, and dressing up at Halloween to hand out treats. She was Mrs. Santa at her father's senior care center one year. She was equally as loving toward animals and was a sought-after pet sitter. In a way, she was a modern day Mary Poppins who cared for us all. She gave and received so much love in her shortened life and she will be dearly missed.
In celebration of her life, there will be a memorial service for Lynn this Friday, January 5, 2018, at 12 noonat the Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905. Condolences and mass cards can be sent to the Sutherland family at 637 Cove Rd., D19, Stamford, CT 06902. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given in honor of Lynn to Gilda’s Club Westchester, a cancer support foundation.
