Obituary of Matthew A Sgritta
Matthew “Butch” Sgritta passed away surrounded by his loved ones on May 3rd,2018 due to complications from surgery. Born July 1, 1953 in Los Angeles, CA he was raised in Stamford, CT before relocating to West Haven, CT. He was a loving son to the late Mary Montecalvo Sgritta and Matthew Sgritta, and his brother Joseph Dagostino.
He is survived by his brother Frank (Bette Ann) Dagostino, and sister Bunny “Mary” Sempey and former brother-in-law Robert Salamon. He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews Stephanie Dagostino with son Shawn, Michael (Robin) Dagostino, Christine Sempey (Trevor Kilgore), and Joseph (Neysa) Dagostino with daughter Aida. In addition, he is survived by his closest and dearest friends whom he considered family. Nick (Doris) Petrafesa with children Dina and Nicky, Rinaldo Dell’Agosto with daughter Indea, and Vincenzo (Antonietta) Petrafesa with children John, Carmen and Sabrina. Butch leaves behind his companion of many years Alberta Hammershoy, her daughter Tammy (Todd) Mclnerney with their children Liam, Aine and Dylan; and her son Chris (Marja) Hammershoy with Marja’s daughter Eva Mullineaux.
Butch earned his bachelor degree from Regents College and a Master’s of Science from Long Island University, cum laude. Butch spent the past 27 years working for the Greenwich Library where he orchestrated many informative programs for the public, during which time he explored many academic courses and programs across numerous disciplines. A devout Catholic, Butch attended mass regularly at St. Lawrence Church in West Haven and was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also volunteered for the Catholic Charities at the New Covenant Center.
His passion for living included a joy of cooking, fishing, music, art, and travel. Butch lived with enthusiasm and wanted to experience all that life has to offer, but his most esteemed participation was his dedication to family and friends, which leaves us all with valued memories forever cherished.
